Maleic Acid-Modified Starch Synthesized by Shear and Cooling Milling Method

ABSTRACT
In this study, we developed a shear and cooling milling machine (SCMM) to investigate the continuous mechanochemical treatment of starch with maleic acid. The temperature of the upper metal millstone, referred to as the SCMM, was maintained at 10◦C by a chiller flow. Corn starch and maleic acid (MA) were dry-blended and treated in the SCMM repeatedly. The effects of repetition were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurement, and scanning electronmicroscopy. The reaction between corn starch andMA predominantly occurred during the first pass through the SCMM, while the reduction in crystallinity or amorphization of the starch commenced after the first milling when MA was present. The crystallinity of native corn starch decreased from 23% to 16% in the first pass in the presence of MA. In the second and third passes, it decreased to 4.0% and 2.4%, respectively. It was concluded that the shear energy generated between themetal millstones was utilized for the chemical reaction between starch and MA during the first pass in the SCMM and for reducing crystallinity.
